“ It’s not what you do but how you do it. Especially when you’re a photographer and the world is already full of wonderfully evocative photos. Montreal artist Marc Cramer has designed an installation at Centre Eye Gallery that shoots holes in what a photo exhibition usually looks like.
Instead of the usual static arrangements, Cramer’s photo impressions of the places he’s been and the things he’s seen are presented on mural paper in 40x60 inch images, each over brushed with gestural color strokes.
Hung from overhead at odd but comfortable eye angles, the images take on a physical presence, accomplishing Cramer’s intention of overwhelming the viewer « as painting or dance can ».
Working from a historical/documentary perspective, « photographing that which is disappearing », but with a romantic spirit evident in his choice of subjects, Cramer has the sureness to transgress his technical finesse with some times stormy, sometimes lyrical sweeps of color.”
